The Threat of Censorship

Couldn’t help but notice a common but disturbing thread running through the Aug 1. Morning Briefing:

Italian Catholics try to get “The Last Temptation of Christ” withdrawn from the Venice Film Festival.

South Africa censors “Cry Freedom.”

A disabled persons’ group calls for a boycott of “Monkey Shines.”

There’s no doubt about the sincerity and passion behind these movements, maybe even about the logic . . . but when these people and their kindred spirits prevail, civilization may as well hang a “going out of business” sign in front of the Marketplace of Ideas.
