U.S. and the Khomeini Regime
Your excellent editorial “An Appalling Cost--for What?” (July 26) ended with “The gulf war has seen many crimes committed. Surely the greatest of these is that those responsible for the carnage are unlikely ever to be called to account.”
That is what the Allies said after World War II when they uncovered the victims of the Nazi Holocaust. However, they did something. They introduced the principle that even the leaders of a sovereign state were responsible to a higher authority and could be charged with crimes against humanity. At Nuremberg they were tried for war crimes, convicted and punished.
Unfortunately, the tribunal was disbanded because we could have built no more fitting memorial to the victims of the Holocaust than an international tribunal that might have prevented such crimes.
