U.S. and the Khomeini Regime

The Khomeini regime’s last-ditch effort at “good behavior” does not signal the return of a prodigal son, nor does it deserve the fatted calf Hunter proposes we dish up (“Iran Gives Moderation an Exploratory Whirl,” Op-Ed Page, July 15). It is, rather, a Machiavellian change in tactics by a brutal dictatorship which finds itself cornered.

The Khomeini government understands only the language of force. If it is saying today that it will end the war, fine; but it must be pushed and prodded all the way to and through the peace process.
