Local News in Brief : Drinking Water Gets OK

State health officials on Monday withdrew their advice that customers of the Amarillo Mutual Water Co. in Rosemead boil water before drinking it.

Steven Takahashi, associate sanitary engineer with the state Department of Health Services, said new tests show that Amarillo Mutual’s water supply is now free of the bacterial contamination that forced the company to shut down a well last Wednesday. Takahashi said the source of the contamination has not been found.

The company, which had not been treating its water, will be required to chlorinate its supply indefinitely. The contaminated well will remain closed until more tests are completed.

Evelyn Ramirez, secretary-manager of Amarillo Mutual, which serves 2,500 Rosemead residents, said the company today will hand deliver to its customers a state health notice saying the water is “bacterially safe to consume and boiling is no longer necessary.”
