Wide receiver Ken Margerum, a former standout at Fountain Valley High School, was released Wednesday by the San Francisco 49ers at his own request, Coach Bill Walsh said.

Margerum, who was signed as a free agent by the 49ers midway through the 1986 season, was injured most of last season and caught one pass for seven yards.

In two seasons with the 49ers, he caught 3 passes for 19 yards.

Margerum was a Times back of the year at Fountain Valley, from which he graduated in 1977. He went to Stanford and was drafted by the Chicago Bears in the third round of the 1981 draft.

He led the Bears with 39 receptions for 584 yards his rookie year. He started most of the games until the 1984 season, which he missed while recuperating from knee surgery.

After that, Margerum was primarily a backup for the Bears until they released him on Oct. 21, 1986.

He missed this season’s first exhibition game, against Miami, with an injury. He was suited up but did not play Saturday night against the Raiders.
