Olympic silver medalist Bruce Kimball will try to qualify for the 1988 U.S. Olympic diving team despite being involved in a recent car accident in which two teen-agers were killed, his father-coach said Saturday in Brandon, Fla.

“He’ll go to Indy,” Dick Kimball said, referring to this week’s diving trials in Indianapolis. “And regardless of whether he dives, he wants to be there to support his teammates.”

Kimball, 25, is free on $10,000 bail after being charged with two counts of vehicular homicide in an Aug. 1 accident in which the car he was driving crashed into a crowd of teen-agers, killing two and injuring six.

“I don’t know what Bruce can tolerate,” said his father, diving coach at University of Michigan. “I don’t know what’s going to happen with the press. I don’t know if he’s ready to dive in a meet of that nature with all the harassing he’s going to get. But I would never rule Bruce out because he’s been taught since he was a little boy to never give up.”
