Two South African homeland states have cleared Sir Richard Attenborough’s anti-apartheid film “Cry Freedom” for screenings--less than a month after South African security forces seized the film from theaters. The homelands, Bophuthatswana and Transkei, are recognized by South Africa (and practically no one else) as independent republics. In Bophuthatswana, one of the two screenings will take place at the Sun City resort casino, 120 miles from Johannesburg, although the the date of the film’s release has not yet been announced. In Transkei, the “Cry Freedom” will be shown on Aug. 29. In addition, three bordering states of South Africa--Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland--also will be showing the film, and are all within driving distance of major South African cities.
