Under orders from Mayor Art Agnos, San Francisco police ignored activists from a group called Food Not Bombs who served rice, beans and fruit to homeless people living in Golden Gate Park and on Haight Street. Last week, nine members of the group were arrested because they has not obtained permits to distribute food. “We don’t want to be in a position of arresting people because they’re giving food to hungry people,” said Bob Prentice, the mayor’s coordinator of homeless programs. Prentice, who watched the distribution with a health inspector, said he would help the group find an alternate site for the program.
