Rowan Hospitalized After Fainting
Syndicated columnist Carl T. Rowan was taken to Georgetown University Hospital Thursday night when he fainted after giving a speech, hospital officials said.
Rowan’s condition and the cause of his collapse were not immediately available, but Georgetown University spokesman Jim Kurtzke said the columnist was “alert, he’s conscious, he’s sitting up.”
An ambulance dispatcher, who would not give his name, said Rowan was taken to the hospital after suffering apparent heat exhaustion.
The columnist was leaving a lecture hall at American University after giving a speech on the presidential campaign when he collapsed, a student who was nearby said.
Rowan, 52, has been the target of national publicity recently for shooting a teen-age intruder who had taken an unauthorized midnight dip in Rowan’s back-yard swimming pool.
The columnist, generally known for his liberal views and an outspoken opponent of handgun use, is scheduled to stand trial Sept. 22 on charges that he used an unregistered handgun and ammunition in the June 14 shooting.
Rowan faces a maximum penalty of two years in prison and fines of $2,000, if he is convicted on both misdemeanor charges.
