Coyotes in Oceanside
Recent news coverage of the coyote problem in Oceanside has made unclear the involvement and policy of the Oceanside Humane Society.
Though we greatly sympathize with those who have been endangered by coyotes displaced by development in rural areas, regulations giving responsibility for controlling coyotes to state and federal agencies prevent us from taking an active part in remedying the situation.
Also, while we agree that the coyotes must be captured and removed from neighborhoods, never do we condone the use of steel-jawed traps, which permanently cripple a coyote and cause intolerable pain.
