Pepperdine’s water polo team, ranked No. 8 in the coaches preseason poll, split four matches in the Wasko tourney. The Waves defeated Loyola Marymount, 16-3, and Cal State Los Angeles, 9-8, and lost to Navy, 11-9, and UCLA, 15-6.
Junior Rob Sutter led Pepperdine with 11 goals, and sophomores Chris Hakim scored five and Erik Wood four.
The Waves, continuing a 10-match home stand, will play host to Stanford at 3 p.m. today and an alumni team at 2 p.m. Sunday at Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool.
In their last match against Stanford, the Waves won, 13-12, in overtime in last year’s NCAA Tournament. It was the second time that Pepperdine had beaten the Cardinal, a winner of six NCAA championships in the last 12 seasons, including 1985 and 1986.
