Prep Football : Turnovers Keep Canyon Winless
Turnovers continue to plague Canyon High School’s football team. Diamond Bar took advantage of four Canyon fumbles Friday night in a 24-10 nonleague victory in front of 500 at El Modena High.
Canyon (0-2) turned the ball over five times in last week’s loss to Corona. Diamond Bar is 1-1.
“We turned the ball over way too much,” Canyon Coach Bob Rau said. “You can’t do that and expect to win.”
Canyon led at halftime, 7-3, scoring with only 26 seconds left. Quarterback Todd Burns completed a 28-yard scoring pass to Danny Hooker. Mario Cabrera kicked the extra point.
Diamond Bar converted two turnovers into scores within four minutes of the third quarter. After Burns fumbled on the Canyon 24-yard line, Diamond Bar capped a four-play drive when Harry Kelly ran seven yards for a touchdown. David Morlan kicked the extra point to give Diamond Bar a 10-7 lead.
Just 2:24 later, Morlan scored from nine yards out after Fred Velez fumbled on Canyon’s 28.
Canyon cut the lead to 17-10 early in the fourth quarter on Cabrera’s 24-yard field goal.
Morlan scored his second touchdown with only a second left in the game on a three-yard run. Morlan gained 216 yards in 25 carries.
“We couldn’t contain Morlan tonight, and I didn’t think we got much better,” Rau said. “ We will see what we can do to fix that this week.”
Velez led Canyon in rushing with 41 yards in 11 carries. Burns completed 5 of 13 passes for 89 yards and a touchdown.
