Santa Monica : Planning Official Quits

Penny Perlman has resigned from the city Planning Commission after 5 1/2 years, citing in part her fear of a return to “divisive politics” in Santa Monica’s government.

Perlman, who has served as the commission’s chairwoman, praised the City Council and Planning Commission for working during the last two years toward a government of “consensus and inclusion.”

But she said the recent selection of council candidates by the city’s dominant political group, Santa Monicans for Renters’ Rights, “has convinced me that a narrow majority of this political faction would willfully set these times (of consensus) aside in favor of a return to the divisive politics of domination.”

Perlman is working as a fund-raiser for Councilman Herb Katz, who is running for reelection against the candidates from Santa Monicans for Renters’ Rights.
