Sockers Defeat Aztecs, 2-0

Rene Ortiz scored 4 minutes 12 seconds into the match to lead the Sockers to a 2-0 victory over San Diego State in an exhibition soccer match in front of 1,387 at Aztec Bowl Sunday night.

Chris Keenan, who led SDSU to the final of the NCAA Division I championships last season, scored for the Sockers with 18 minutes remaining in the match.

SDSU plays host to Cal State Los Angeles Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

UC San Diego opened a 3-0 lead en route to defeating host University of San Diego, 3-1, in a nonleague soccer match.

UCSD (11-0-2) is ranked sixth in Division III. USD, a Division I team, is 6-5.

Mike Kappes and Mike Loeben scored to give UCSD a 2-0 lead and Mike Bradley added a goal on a penalty kick. Chris Duke scored for USD.

The United States International University women’s soccer team surrendered an own goal and lost, 1-0, to visiting UC Irvine in overtime. UC Irvine is 4-10-2. USIU (3-4) has lost three in a row.

FOOTBALL

Madison High School has forfeited its 12-9 season-opening victory over seventh-ranked Helix because of an ineligible player. Madison has lost four in a row since the victory and Helix (5-0) has won four in a row.
