Father Jean-Bertrand Aristide, a Roman Catholic priest with a wide following among Haiti’s poor, said the Vatican has transferred him and that he must be in Rome by Oct. 17. In a statement read on the Catholic Church’s Radio Soleil, Aristide urged his followers to “stay calm” but did not say why he had been recalled. A Sept. 11 attack on Aristide’s St. Jean Bosco Church in Port-au-Prince by gunmen linked to the ousted Duvalier dictatorship and military ruler Lt. Gen. Henry Namphy left at least 12 dead. The attack sparked a Sept. 17 coup by enlisted men who ousted Namphy.
