Tennis Roundup : Navratilova, Evert Advance With Easy Victories

Defending champion and top-seeded Martina Navratilova and No. 2-seeded Chris Evert easily won their matches in a $250,000 Virginia Slims tennis tournament Friday at Filderstadt, West Germany, to move into the semifinals.

Navratilova, a four-time winner of the tournament and ranked second in the world, defeated Radka Zrubakova of Czechoslovakia, 6-0, 6-1, while Evert beat Sylvia Hanika of West Germany, 6-0, 6-4.

In today’s semifinals, Evert will face Italy’s Raffaella Reggi, who ousted France’s Nathalie Tauziat, 6-2, 6-3, and Navratilova will play West Germany’s Eva Pfaff, who eliminated South African Elna Reinach, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.

Swede Christian Bergstrom upset top-seeded Frenchman Henri Leconte, 6-3, 7-6, in the $290,000 Olympia Open quarterfinals at Toulouse, France.

No. 2-seeded Jimmy Connors had no trouble with Michiel Schapers of the Netherlands, winning, 6-2, 6-4. Connors will play Jakob Hlasek of Switzerland, who beat Milan Srejber of Czechoslovakia, 7-5, 6-4.

In the other quarterfinal, No. 3-seeded Andrei Chesnokov of the Soviet Union turned back Tomas Smid of Czechoslovakia, 6-4, 6-2.
