In the wake of widespread rioting, Islamic fundamentalists in Algeria called for an end to emergency regulations and urged more vigorous promotion of Islam and more civic freedoms. Officials imposed a six-day state of emergency last week during unrest sparked by high prices and the government’s austerity program, but the fundamentalists said such rules had been in force since the nation gained independence from France in 1962. In a 12-point plan, fundamentalist leaders called for amnesty for political prisoners, a guaranteed minimum wage and unrestricted freedom to spread Islam.
