Backup quarterback Charles Thompson ran for 3 touchdowns and passed for another as No. 9 Oklahoma ran for a National Collegiate Athletic Assn.-record 768 yards in trouncing Kansas State, 70-24, in Big Eight game Saturday.

The 768 yards eclipsed the NCAA record of 758 set by Oklahoma against Colorado in 1980. The Sooners finished with 829 total yards.

Reserve halfback Eric Mitchel added 161 yards and 2 touchdowns in just 6 carries. He scored on an 85-yard run in the third quarter and on a 47-yarder in the fourth quarter.

Thompson, starting in place of injured Jamelle Holieway, scored on runs of 11, 5 and 77 yards and threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Adrian Cooper--all in the first quarter--as Oklahoma (5-0 overall, 2-0 in the Big Eight) built a 35-0 lead.

Kansas State (0-6, 0-2) has lost 18 in a row to Oklahoma by an average of 34 points.

Holieway, who sprained his right ankle against Texas last week, played three series in the first half before reinjuring the ankle.
