Corey Pavin shot a 4-under-par 66 Saturday and stretched his lead to 5 strokes in the $600,000 Texas Open golf tournament at San Antonio.

“It’s my tournament to win now,” Pavin said after completing 3 rounds on the Oak Hills Country Club course in 193, 17 under par and equal to the low 54-hole total on the PGA Tour this year.

Pavin had earlier rounds of 64 and 63, which had put him within just one stroke of the PGA record of 126 for the first 2 rounds set by Tommy Bolt in the 1954 Virginia Beach (Va. ) Open.

Pavin birdied the first hole from 12 feet, then hit short irons inside of 8 feet on the fourth and fifth and birdied them both.

Tom Pernice, who hasn’t finished higher than fifth in 3 years on the tour, birdied 2 of the final 3 holes for a 67 and was second at 198.

Tom Kite shot a 69 that left him in third place at 200 with one round left in the chase for the $108,000 first prize.

Kite’s former teammate at Texas, Ben Crenshaw, was another stroke behind after a 69.

Mike Sullivan, the first-round leader, shot 77 and fell 14 back at 207. Tom Watson shot a 72 and is at 208.

Greg Norman edged Seve Ballesteros of Spain, 67 to 69, in the $1-million Dunhill Golf Cup, advancing Australia into a final matchup against either defending champion England or Ireland at St. Andrews, Scotland.

A match between England’s Nick Faldo and Ireland’s Des Smyth was halted by fog on the final hole.

When the match resumes today, Faldo will need a birdie to force a playoff.
