Roberson Passes Western Past Brea-Olinda, 30-14
Western High School quarterback Miles Roberson passed for 157 yards and 4 touchdowns to lead the Pioneers to a 30-14 Orange League victory over Brea-Olinda Saturday night at Western.
Roberson, who also punts, put the Pioneers (3-4 overall, 2-0 in league play) on the board early in the first quarter with a 47-yard touchdown pass to Gary Fernandez on a fake punt play.
Brea-Olinda (1-6, 0-2) tied the score when Chad Marlow scored on a 14-yard quarterback sneak and Chase Gamble kicked the extra point.
Roberson gave the Pioneers the lead for good with a 16-yard scoring pass to Gilbert Brito, who also kicked four extra points.
Western increased its lead to 16-7 on a safety when Brea-Olinda snapped the ball out of the end zone from a punt formation from its 7.
Marlow, who had 220 yards pasing, closed the gap with a 22-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Nicholson with 2 minutes 45 seconds left in the half. Gamble’s extra point made it 16-14.
The Wildcats missed two chances to take the lead in the third quarter. Aarron Charlton missed a 33-yard field goal with 7:33 left in the quarter. His 35-yard attempt with 5 seconds left was wide left.
Western put the game out of reach with two fourth-quarter touchdowns.
Roberson connected with Brito for a touchdown, this time on a 15-yard pass play with 6:41 remaining. Roberson then threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to Gabriel Ramirez with 3:35 left.
Roberson completed 10 of 19 passes. Senior Don Norris led Western’s running attack with 138 yards in 25 carries.
