CAMPAIGN ’88 : Bentsen Tops PAC Race
Democratic vice presidential candidate Lloyd Bentsen, who also is running for reelection to the Senate from Texas, has received $2.3 million from political action committees, more than any other candidate, Common Cause reported in Washington.
Bentsen has raised $12.4 million overall for his Senate campaign, second only to the $12.5 million raised for Sen. Pete Wilson (R-Calif.). Bentsen is the fourth-biggest spender, at $5.1 million, and had the most cash on hand ($3.2 million) of all Senate incumbents as of Sept. 30.
The citizens’ lobby said its study showed that, by a wide margin, senators seeking reelection have raised more money, spent more and received more in PAC contributions than their challengers.
