Reynolds and China Making Cigarettes in Joint Venture
American tobacco giant R. J. Reynolds began production today of its best-selling cigarettes in the first joint-venture cigarette factory in China.
The China-American Cigarette Co., a joint-venture between R. J. Reynolds Tobacco International and the Xiamen Cigarette Factory and Xiamen United Development Co., is to produce 2.5 billion cigarettes annually when fully operational.
The factory, located in eastern Fujian province, is capitalized at $21 million with R.J. Reynolds contributing 50%, according to a statement.
The four brands to be produced initially are Camel and Winston as well as Golden Bridge and Sprint, the first two jointly owned brands to be made in China.
