The Region : Program to Aid Asian Youth

The United Way has awarded $164,000 for a project designed to help the growing numbers of young Asian immigrants who are having difficulty adjusting to life in the United States.

The grant for the Asian Newcomer Youth Project represents the largest amount the United Way has ever given a program in the Asian community of Los Angeles County, according to Judy Chu, who heads the Asian Task Force of the United Way/San Gabriel Valley Region.

Many young people from Asia, Chu said, “are having grave difficulties adjusting to life here. This results in family conflicts and alienation.” A program like this has long been needed to help alleviate racial tensions and misunderstandings that arise from cultural differences among youngsters, Chu said.

The task force will use the money to set up an office with bilingual counselors who will assist youngsters and make referrals to agencies such as the Asian-Pacific Family Center in Rosemead and the Monterey Park Boys and Girls Club.
