Friday marks the celebration of Veterans Day, established in 1926 as Armistice Day to commemorate the signing of the Armistice ending World War I. The name was changed to Veterans Day in 1954 to honor men and women who have served America in its armed forces.

Closed: All federal, state, county and city offices and courts; Los Angeles unified schools; libraries and banks.

Celebrations: 10:30 a.m., Veterans Administration Medical Center ceremonies featuring 99-year-old World War I vet raising the American flag, UCLA Air Force ROTC color guard, speeches and flyover by the Condor Squadron of World War II planes; 10:30 a.m., Pasadena Chamber of Commerce ceremony at 100 N. Garfield Ave. featuring proclamation by Mayor William Thomson and “missing man” flyover by the Condor Search and Rescue Squadron; 11 a.m., County Supervisor Ed Edelman address to Hispanic veterans and other military personnel and display of scale-model of the Vietnam War Veterans Memorial Wall in East Los Angeles at Belvedere Park; 11 a.m., West Coast Sacred Torch Ceremonies in Court of Liberty at Forest Lawn Memorial-Park, featuring 33 flag-carrying color guards, Medal of Honor holders, members of 15 veterans organizations and speech by City Councilman John Ferarro; 11 a.m., Chiriaco Summit in Riverside County, former President Gerald R. Ford dedicates new George Patton Memorial Museum, with representatives of a dozen veterans’ groups, U.S. Air Force flyover, band concert, picnic and USO entertainers; 1 p.m. San Pedro at John S. Gibson Jr. Park, dedication of American Merchant Marine Veterans Memorial; 7 p.m. Veterans’ salute to Bob Hope at Navy-Marine Corps Reserve Center, 1600 Stadium Way.
