The Japanese Red Army, a group blamed for an airport massacre and hijackings during the turbulent 1970s, has called on the Japanese to “rise up” and overthrow the 2,600-year-old monarchy after Emperor Hirohito dies. The emperor, 87, has been bedridden since Sept. 19. Authorities in Tokyo confirmed receipt of a statement by the Red Army from a hide-out in the Middle East dated Oct. 1. It called on the Japanese people to “fight using every means and tactic to crush the emperor system” after Hirohito’s death. The emperor was reported in stable condition for a second day after a crisis when his blood pressure suddenly plummeted.
