Paper Published Despite Fire

The Louisville Courier-Journal appeared today as a scaled-down eight-page edition printed at a newspaper 80 miles away after a fire and explosion ripped through an adjacent printing plant, injuring 21 people and forcing the evacuation of the newspaper building.

The newspaper’s staff went “back to the old-fashioned way,” said George Gill, president and publisher. Staffers worked with typewriters and telephones set up in an old company-owned building across the street. The Courier-Journal’s morning editions were printed by the Lexington Herald Leader.
