A wintry storm spawned in the Pacific rolled through the Cascade Range of Washington, triggering snowslides that prompted the closing of one key mountain pass and covering other roads with snow and ice. The storm dumped more than a foot of snow, which allowed at least one ski area in neighboring Oregon to get the winter season off to an early start. In the Northeast, winds gusting to nearly 80 m.p.h. buffeted Upstate New York, spinning traffic lights around and causing scattered power failures. Thunderstorms stretched from the central Gulf Coast into the mid-Atlantic states.
