Spain’s Supreme Court has unanimously recommended a royal pardon for the ailing former commander-in-chief of the armed forces serving 26 years in prison for masterminding a coup attempt in 1981, judicial sources said Wednesday.

Former Gen. Alfonso Armada Comyn, 68, once a military tutor of King Juan Carlos I, was convicted of planning the uprising Feb. 23, 1981.
