Ruling on Chicago Election Due Monday

The Illinois Supreme Court will rule Monday on when Chicago must hold its next mayoral election, the court announced Wednesday.

A Cook County circuit judge ruled earlier this year that the city must hold an election next spring to fill the two years remaining on the term of the late Harold Washington.

Supporters of Mayor Eugene Sawyer appealed that decision to the Supreme Court, arguing that his selection last year as acting mayor entitles him to serve out Washington’s term, which ends in 1991. The high court’s decision will come less than a month before the filing period opens for the spring election.
