College Basketball : Cavalin, Arlotto Lead CSUN Women to Win

Chris Cavalin scored 19 points and had 11 rebounds and teammate Julie Arlotto scored a game-high 20 points to lead Cal State Northridge to a 72-60 victory over Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in the championship game of the Mustang Classic women’s basketball tournament at San Luis Obispo.

Cavalin, who had 21 points and 12 rebounds in a first-round victory over Azusa Pacific on Friday, was named the tournament’s most valuable player.

Arlotto also was named to the all-tournament team.

Bridgitte Ealy added 10 points for Northridge (2-0).

Jodi Hasselfield scored 15 points for San Luis Obispo (1-1).

In another women’s basketball game:

UC San Diego 77, Occidental 76 (OT)--UC San Diego’s Tracy Ragatz sank a 3-point shot and the Tigers went scoreless in the final minute of overtime to account for the difference in Occidental’s opener at UC San Diego.

Kelly Stephenson scored a game-high 25 points and Joelle Orton added 23 for Occidental.

The Tigers were outscored, 7-6, in overtime after tying the Tritons, 70-70, at the end of regulation.

MEN

Cal Lutheran 80, Cal State Hayward 64--Junior Mike Demeter scored 24 points, grabbed 15 rebounds and blocked 6 shots and senior guard Steve deLaveaga added 23 points and 5 rebounds to lead the Kingsmen in a nonconference game at Cal State Hayward.

The Kingsmen (1-1) overcame a 48-37 halftime deficit.

Blake Miraglia added 16 points and 5 steals for Cal Lutheran.

Occidental 109, Christ College 89--John Keister scored a team-high 24 points and center Chris Anderson added 18 points and 7 rebounds to lead the Tigers in the consolation championship of the Christ College tournament in Irvine.

The Tigers (1-1) had 5 players in double figures and shot 56% from the field. They also converted 35 of 43 free throws (81%).

Brett Dennis scored points 17 off the bench for Occidental and guard Ethan Caldwell added 15 points. John Crawley had 14 points and 6 rebounds.

Moorpark 105, Antelope Valley 86--Four players scored 13 points each to lead the Raiders in a nonconference game at Moorpark.

Charlie Cangelosi and Damion Dicus each scored 13 and Greg Taylor and Bruce Watson each added 13 off the bench. Roger Thomas contributed 12 for the Raiders (3-0), who led at halftime, 52-33.
