A further sign of the cooled off wine-cooler business came from New York’s Canandaigua Wine Co., which announced layoffs of 20% of its 650 workers nationwide because of slumping sales of its Sun Country brand. The company runs three wineries in New York, three in California and one in Patrick, S.C. Forty of the layoffs will come with the closing of a bottling plant in Petersburg, Va., but another 90 jobs will be trimmed at all levels, including sales representatives.
