Protesters dissatisfied with former President Chun Doo Hwan’s apology for wrongdoing under his government battled riot police on university campuses today and 30 top ruling party officials submitted their resignations.

After Chun apologized this morning (Story, Page 9), 30 top officials of the ruling Democratic Justice Party submitted their resignations, freeing President Roh Tae Woo to eliminate those tied to Chun and pursue his promise to rid the government of hard-liners and promote democratic reforms.

But initial reaction from the opposition and radical students indicated that the storm had not passed, and opposition leader Kim Dae Jung insisted that Chun understated his worth.

About 200 students battled riot police at Seoul National University, calling for the arrest of Chun and his wife. Similar violence erupted on at least three other major universities.
