Military President Augusto Pinochet snubbed departing U.S. Ambassador Harry Barnes, a frequent target of the general’s anger, by refusing to grant him the traditional farewell audience.

“This government does not accept . . . that they impose on it a representative who did nothing but make political propaganda against it. That is why I did not say goodby,” Pinochet was quoted as saying in today’s newspapers. Barnes left Santiago Saturday at the end of a three-year stay during which U.S. pressure on Chile increased in an aim to prompt greater respect for human rights and a return to democracy.
