Times Staff Writer

Poly High School of Long Beach, where the flow of football talent never ceases, has 11 players on The Times South Coast All-Star High School Football Team. The Jackrabbits, who had an 8-1-1 record, placed seven players on offense and four on defense.

Dominguez High, 10-2 and co-winner with Paramount of the San Gabriel Valley League, has four players on the team, and Jordan, which tied Poly for the Moore League title, has three.

The all-star team was selected by Times sportswriters based on a poll of coaches. First-team players from throughout Southern California will be honored at a breakfast and awards ceremony at 9 a.m. Sunday at the Anaheim Hilton, 777 Convention Way. The featured speaker will be UC Berkeley football Coach Bruce Snyder.

The All-South Coast team:

OFFENSE

Michael Loyola, guard, Poly--”We ran behind him when we needed the big yards,” Thomas Whiting, Poly’s co-head coach, said of Loyola, who made the All-South Coast Team for the second straight year. How tough is he? “As nasty as they come,” Whiting said.

James Conlon, guard, Poly--A team leader, he made 90% of the defensive calls for the Jackrabbits. “He is real studious,” Whiting said. “He was always asking you questions, so he was totally prepared for the games.”

Nephi Aiono, tackle, Dominguez--A 3-year starter, he was “one of the main reasons our offense averaged more than 200 yards on the ground,” said Dominguez Coach Willie Donerson. Aiono also was an excellent pass blocker.

Charles Revis, tackle, Poly--At a powerful 275 pounds, Revis was Poly’s biggest lineman. Volatile and team-oriented, Revis excelled as a blocker on running plays.

Craig Peterson, center, Millikan--Coach Dave Radford of the Rams says Peterson has the “highest moral and ethical character of any young man I’ve met in a decade.” A master of blocking techniques, he was a 2-way starter and made All-Moore League.

Kenny Powell, tight end, Poly--The 6-4 Powell caught 20 passes for more than 400 yards, including an 88-yard touchdown reception against Jordan. An excellent blocker, he switched from defense but his hard-hitting style proved that he had retained a defensive player’s mentality.

Michael Carter, quarterback, Poly--”Under pressure, he comes up with the big plays,” Whiting said of Carter, who led Poly comebacks in victories against Banning and Fountain Valley. He completed 65 of 137 passes for 1,643 yards and 18 TDs. He ran 62 times for 334 yards and 3 TDs.

Johnny Robinson, back, Jordan--Facing eight- and nine-man fronts, he rushed for 1,463 yards (a school record) and 13 TDs in 222 carries as he led the Panthers to their first Moore League title. Quick and elusive, Robinson often made the first tackler miss him, and he fumbled only twice. More than a half dozen big-time colleges are recruiting him.

Kenneth Barnes, back, Dominguez--A finesse runner, Barnes gained more than 1,400 yards and scored 18 TDs. A strong safety on defense, Barnes played 48 minutes every game. “It was sad we couldn’t get him out of there and give him a rest,” Donerson said.

Troy Jones, wide receiver, Poly--Short and speedy with an explosive first step, Jones caught 25 passes for 544 yards (21.8 per catch) and 10 TDs.

Stanley Alexander, wide receiver, Poly--About the same size as Jones, Alexander had statistics as glittering. He caught 24 passes for 597 yards (24.9 per catch) and 5 TDs. “He just didn’t drop anything,” Whiting said.

Lester Falatea, kicker, Jordan--He averaged 42.3 yards on his punts, half of which were downed inside the 20-yard line. Of his kickoffs, 95% reached the end zone.

DEFENSE

Sal Larios, lineman, Paramount--Coach Ken Sutch said the athletic Larios could be depended upon to successfully challenge the lead blocker. Fast and strong, he applied constant pressure to quarterbacks.

Chris Sestito, lineman, Lakewood--Quickness, intelligence and strength are the attributes of Sestito, who was an All-Moore League player two straight years. His grade-point average is 3.8 and he is interested in attending UC Berkeley or Stanford.

Earl Oliver, lineman, Poly--Very quick and strong, Oliver played varsity for three years. “He was hard working and a real hustler,” said Poly Co-Head Coach Jerry Jaso. “He was always around the ball.”

Chris Thomas, lineman, Jordan--He used his quickness, strength and natural ability to lead the Panthers in sacks and fumble recoveries. UCLA, Arizona State, Utah and Nevada Las Vegas are among schools interested in him.

Edward Cabs, linebacker, Poly--The 6-4, 195-pound Cabs played outside linebacker, excelling at pass coverage. Great speed, very heady and a big hitter.

Mike Wall, linebacker, Poly--Wall, who led Poly in tackles, excelled at going down the line of scrimmage and finding the ball. Extremely quick and very steady, he was a 2-year starter and made the All-South Coast second team a year ago.

Malcolm Hunt, linebacker, Dominguez--A junior, Hunt started for the second straight season. He called defensive signals for the Dons, was All-San Gabriel Valley League and led the team with 79 unassisted tackles.

Steve Hayes, linebacker, Cerritos--Defensive player of the year in the San Gabriel Valley League, Hayes made 80 tackles and, as a fullback/tight end, scored 8 TDs. “A super athlete,” Cerritos Coach Wayne Manzo said of the 200-pound Hayes, who in one game caught All-South Coast back Barnes of Dominguez from behind.

Jason Jones, back, Poly--Jaso said Jones is probably the best pure athlete Poly has had at free safety. A junior, he had seven interceptions but his reputation has been earned by coming up quickly and hitting bigger people so hard their heads snap back.

Brian Porter, back, Cerritos--A 3-year starter, Porter is a hard-working cornerback who is being recruited by Arizona State and Utah. As a running back, he scored five TDs. He also had a 95-yard kickoff return and a 96-yard punt return for scores.

Isaac Walker, back, Dominguez--With 11 interceptions, he easily made All-San Gabriel Valley League. A junior, Walker also played quarterback, rushing for five TDs and passing for three.
