Dustin Hoffman shared the glory of the premiere of his new film, “Rain Man,” with an autistic man who served as a model for Hoffman’s character, an idiot savant who inherits $3 million from his father’s estate but has no concept of money. Hoffman, director Barry Levinson and producer Mark Johnson held the benefit premiere in Huntington, W. Va., to help raise funds for the Autism Services Center, which is run by Ruth Sullivan, mother of the autistic man, Joseph Sullivan. About 1,500 people attended Sunday’s benefit at the ornate Keith-Albee Theater. The center said it expected to get $30,000 to $35,000.
