Downey : School Site Put Up for Sale
The Board of Education of the Downey Unified School District voted unanimously Tuesday to try to sell or lease Edith Unsworth School to raise money to refurbish the aging Downey High campus, an district spokeswoman said.
In the next couple of months, the district will seek offers on the 10.5-acre site at 9001 Lindsey Ave. from public agencies, as required by law, and then from private parties, said spokeswoman Michele M. Swanson.
The district experienced a decline in enrollment and stopped using Unsworth as an elementary school in June, 1972. It has since been used for special education offices and special education classes, which will be moved to other schools, Swanson said.
The site must be appraised, but district officials hope it will be valued between $7 million and $10 million.
District officials estimate it will cost about $5 million to renovate several buildings at Downey High, as well as repair parking lots and make other improvements.
