The main opposition candidate for president in Sri Lanka, vowing to challenge the election results, said she lost because of widespread fraud by the governing party. Former Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike lost in Monday’s balloting to Prime Minister Ranasinghe Premadasa by 50.9% to 44.9%, according to government election results. She accused her opponents of taking ballot boxes to police stations instead of official counting centers and stuffing them with ballots. Ranjan Wijeratne, chairman of the governing United National Party, denied the charges.
