Two men, believed to be border bandits, were shot to death after they opened fire on police and Border Patrol agents just north of the international border at San Ysidro, authorities said. Other assailants were involved in the shooting, although authorities did not immediately say whether any arrests had been made. Police said members of the Border Crime Prevention Unit--a joint operation between the San Diego Police Department and the Border Patrol--were fired on by two “border bandits” in the vicinity of the south levee of the Tijuana River. Police returned fire. One man was killed “immediately;” the other was “expiring as paramedics arrived,” police said.
