A $10,000 donation has been awarded to a nonprofit agency that provides temporary housing to help homeless families in the area to become self-sufficient, a spokeswoman for Allergan Inc. said.

Michelle Sweet said the Irvine-based pharmaceutical company issued a check Wednesday to Anne Miller, executive director of Irvine Temporary Housing, to help maintain two renovated farmhouses.

“I had just looked over the budget and was feeling a little worried,” Miller said Thursday. She said the agency’s tight budget would barely maintain the farmhouses and 5 apartments the agency also manages.

“I was truly overwhelmed,” Miller said.

She said the money will be used for the farmhouses and to buy refrigerators for five new apartments the agency plans to open in January. The agency will then be able to house 48 families a year, Miller said.

The agency receives about 35 requests for housing each week, she said.
