IN BRIEF : Motor Trend Honors Thunderbird
From Times staff and wire service reports
DETROIT — Ford’s new Thunderbird Super Coupe was named by Motor Trend magazine today as its 1989 Car of the Year, marking the third time a Thunderbird has won the publication’s award.
The 40th annual award was presented at a preview of the North American International Auto Show. The performance version of the all-new Thunderbird is powered by a supercharged V-6 engine and sells for about $20,000.
Other nominees for the award, coveted because of its use in advertising, were Chrysler Corp.’s new Plymouth Acclaim LX and Dodge Spirit ES compacts, and Ford’s Mercury Cougar XR-7, which is similar to the Thunderbird and is also powered by a supercharged V-6.
