Cleveland Reserves Trigger 111-58 Runaway
So much for letdowns.
Buoyed by the play of its bench, Cleveland High scored 37 points in the second quarter to break open a 3-point game and rout Gardena, 111-58, in a nonleague game Wednesday at Cleveland.
Six days after winning a 30-team tournament in Las Vegas, the Cavaliers showed early signs of sluggishness before rallying to bury Gardena (9-4) over the final 3 quarters.
Gardena, which trailed, 20-17, after the first quarter, led for most of the first 8 minutes. Cleveland, however, outscored Gardena, 91-41, thereafter. Cleveland’s total of 111 points is a season high.
With the Cavaliers struggling in the first quarter, the reserves came through. Junior guards Eddie Hill (20 points) and Andre Chevalier (10 points) came off the bench to key the rally.
“I’ll sub these other guys in there in a second,” Cleveland Coach Bob Braswell said. “I don’t want any of our starters thinking they’re in the comfort zone.”
Point guard Adonis Jordan scored a game-high 29 points for Cleveland, adding 15 assists and 6 steals. Center Warren Harrell scored 8 points and added 12 rebounds. Forward Lucious Harris, who did not start because of illness, had 13 points. Eleven different Cleveland players scored and all 16 saw action.
