High School Basketball : Bell-Jeff Rallies for 55-49 Win Over Burbank
Cross-town rivals traveling in opposite directions collided for only the second time in 10 years as Bell-Jeff High (12-1) staged a second-half rally to defeat Burbank (1-10), 55-49, in a nonleague boys’ basketball game Wednesday night at Bell-Jeff.
In the teams’ first meeting since 1981, Burbank built a 33-25 halftime lead. But leading scorers Kayheed Murray (9 points) and Edmundo Zepeda (9) failed to score in the third quarter. The Bulldogs scored only 8 points in the third quarter and 16 in the second half.
Meanwhile, center Nick Sanderson scored a game-high 18 points to lead the Bell-Jeff charge. Ray Witt and Chris Dyer each added 12 points.
Carson 89, Granada Hills 78--Alvin Brown scored a game-high 28 points to pace Granada Hills (8-3), which has lost 2 in a row. Jamal Brantley added 20 points and John Johnson scored 18.
Camarillo 84, Royal 74--Frank Dews scored 26 points and had 9 rebounds for Camarillo in a Marmonte League opener at Royal.
David Harbour had 21 points and 8 assists for Camarillo (9-3, 1-0). J. P. Ouellette had a team-high 22 points for Royal (5-8, 0-1) and teammate Russell Myers added 20 points.
Simi Valley 64, Channel Islands 49--Three Pioneers scored in double figures as Simi Valley pulled away in the second half of its Marmonte League opener at Channel Islands. Jeff Marciano led the Pioneers (8-5) with 16 points and 7 rebounds. Mike Wawryk added 12 points and Steve Carnes had 10 points.
The win was the third in a row and fourth in the last five games for Simi Valley.
Montclair Prep 94, Santa Paula 30--The Mounties didn’t miss guard Craig Handschu as they hammered host Santa Paula in a nonleague game. Handschu, the team’s leading scorer is probably out for the season after undergoing knee surgery last week.
J. T. Billingslea led Montclair Prep with 18 points. Jason Gerber scored 14 points and had 6 steals and Robert Thomas scored 16 points and had 14 rebounds.
Oakwood 75, Windward 38--Mitchell Butler scored 32 points and grabbed 16 rebounds to lead Oakwood in a Liberty League opener at Oakwood. Butler also had a game-high 7 assists.
Campbell Hall 63, Bel-Air Prep 62--Ty Leatherman, who finished with 14 points and 5 steals, made a pair of free throws with 7 seconds to give Campbell Hall an upset win in a Delphic League opener at Bel-Air Prep.
Junior Flip Sides had 15 points and 6 rebounds, both career highs, for Campbell Hall (5-5, 1-0).
Moorpark 84, Villanova 27--Scott Semer led Moorpark (3-6) with 18 points in a nonleague rout at Moorpark.
GIRLS’
Hart 79, Saugus 29--Forward Nikki Brodowy and Nicole Anthony each scored 14 points to lead Hart in the nonleague game at Saugus. Brodowy pulled down 7 rebounds as did Sara Wilson, who also scored 12 points.
Kim Posey added 10 points for Hart (11-2).
Kennedy 76, Van Nuys 55--Dawn Coleman and Maria Fujarte each scored 24 points for the Golden Cougars in the nonleague game at Kennedy.
Felicia Stanley added 9 points for Kennedy (5-1), which led, 18-4, after the first quarter.
North Hollywood 79, Granada Hills 34--Claudia Rocha and G. G. Sweet each scored 20 points to lead North Hollywood in a nonleague game at Granada Hills.
Rocha had 10 rebounds for North Hollywood (7-3) and teammate Michelle Cabaldon added 13 points.
El Camino Real 65, Agoura 37--Guards Cathy Balint and Angela Rich each scored 12 points for El Camino Real (5-4) in a nonleague game at Agoura.
L.A. Baptist 57, Miraleste 35--Kristin Heerema led all scorers with 18 points and 15 rebounds for the Knights (8-4) in the nonleague game at Miraleste.
