Let Officials Have Final Say on Calls
Now that the NFL playoffs have begun and the instant replay is starting to show what a time-consuming nuisance it is, I’m reminded of the true story of the Marx Brothers playing golf at Hillcrest Country Club in Los Angeles. They weren’t wearing their shirts and were told to put them on by the course marshal because there was a rule against that. They complied grudgingly, but the next day after teeing off fully dressed, they strolled down the second fairway without their pants on.
I relate this story because it points out that you can fix a mistake but you cannot fix bad judgment. Football officials are guilty of both mistakes and bad judgment, and the instant replay does very little for one and nothing for the other.
Pay the officials what they are worth, accept mistakes as part of the game, and let’s play football instead of flagball.
