Ban Against American Beef in Europe
In an act of desperation and bravery, the Common Market has issued a statement to the American meat-producing industry. By refusing to buy meat that has been perverted with growth hormones, they have taken a major step toward protecting their citizens from needless physical and emotional scarring. If the people in this country knew what goes into meat production in the United States they would also stop buying meat. As usual, President Reagan refuses to accept as fact anything that he doesn’t want to believe. He claims there is no scientific evidence to prove that the hormones have any ill effects on consumers, and on that basis, he has placed a tariff on foods imported from the Common Market countries.
There is plenty of medical evidence that hormones can and do cause terrible physical aberrations, which leave emotional scars on young children that can last a lifetime. The evidence is there for the reading. I have stopped eating meat myself, for this, and many other reasons. The only people who benefit from the growth hormones are the people who sell the meat by the pound.
This is America, but that doesn’t mean our leaders have all the right answers. I suggest our citizens start paying some heed to the evidence, and stop putting their lives in the hands of the greedy.
