Two Upset in College Tennis Tournament
Top-seeded Jeff Tarango of Stanford and third-seeded Johan Kjellsten of Louisiana State were upset Friday, the opening day of the National Collegiate tennis tournament at Shadow Mountain Resort and Tennis Club at Palm Desert.
Unseeded Byron Black of USC defeated Kjellsten, 1-6, 6-2, 6-1, by becoming more aggressive in the last two sets after staying at the baseline in the first set.
John Yancey of Kentucky repeatedly charged the net en route to a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Tarango.
“I’ve seen him play better,” Yancey said. “It’s by far the biggest win in my college career.”
The invitational event is for 32 men and 32 women from the top 8 teams, based on computer rankings. Singles and doubles play will continue through Sunday.
