East Germany Plans Major Expansion of Nuclear Power-Producing Plants
EAST BERLIN — East Germany will greatly increase its nuclear power capacity over the next decade, an official East Berlin newspaper said Friday.
The Berliner Zeitung said the government was aiming for a capacity of between 6,000 and 7,000 megawatts by the year 2000.
Five of eight planned 400-megawatt reactors were on line in the northern city of Greifswald, with a 1,000-megawatt unit due to open this year, it said.
An unspecified number were operating in the central towns of Stendal and Rheinsberg.
Ten percent of East Germany’s electricity is derived from nuclear power.
