Top Men’s Player Wins in Badminton
Chris Jogis of Redondo Beach, the nation’s top-ranked men’s singles player, defeated Benny Lee of Tempe, Ariz., 13-18, 15-12, 15-12, Sunday in a men’s singles final in the third annual San Diego Open badminton tournament at the Federal Building in Balboa Park.
Jeff Kamphius of Long Beach defeated Paul Roo of Berkeley, 2-15, 15-4, 18-16, in the other men’s singles final.
Denyse Julien of Calgary upset top-ranked women’s singles player Joy Kitzmiller of Manhattan Beach in the women’s singles championship, 11-0, 11-2.
The top-ranked men’s doubles team of Jogis-Lee defeated Mike Walker of Encinitas and Frederico Valdez of Lima, Peru in a men’s doubles final, 15-8, 15-9. In the other men’s doubles final, Surya Bahari and Tracy Tom of Los Angeles defeated Siew Ko and Lou Ting of Los Angeles, 15-10, 15-2.
Claire Allison and Denyse Julien of Calgary defeated Linda French of San Diego and Linda Safarik-Tong of Berkeley in the women’s doubles championship, 15-2, 15-7.
In a mixed doubles final, Lee and Kitzmiller defeated Valdez and French, 15-4, 15-6. In the other mixed doubles final, Lou Ting and Wen Ting of Los Angeles defeated Bahari and Karen Ko of Los Angeles, 7-15, 15-13, 15-5.
