Larry Jinks, senior vice president-news and operations at Knight-Ridder, has been named publisher of the San Jose Mercury News, a Knight-Ridder newspaper. His successor will be announced later. Jinks will succeed William A. Ott, who will become chairman of the Mercury News, effective April.
Jinks, 59, is a former editor of the Mercury News and executive editor of the Miami Herald, another Knight-Ridder newspaper. He joined the corporate staff eight years ago as vice president-news. He became senior vice president-news in 1983 and assumed his current title in 1986.
