The furor over whether to rename the new bayfront convention center for the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. has moved to the San Diego Unified Port District, with a majority of port commissioners saying they have been inundated by mail and telephone calls from residents overwhelmingly opposed to the change. Although the San Diego City Council voted on Tuesday to rename the bayfront San Diego Convention Center for the slain civil rights leader, the Port District, which built the $160-million center, has final say on naming the facility. No date has yet been set for the vote, but Port District Chairman Louis Wolfsheimer said the controversial issue could come before the board next month.
