Clipper History Is Challenge for Casey
The job of coaching the Clippers, which now belongs to Don Casey, has never been one for longevity. Just ask Gene Shue, who was fired last week, midway through his 3-year guaranteed contract in his second go-round with the club.
The list is not very long, but consider that the Clippers are now on their fifth coach, after their sixth change, since moving from Buffalo, N.Y., to San Diego before the 1978-79 season.
The four previous coaches are scattered throughout the country, including a couple who are having success with other National Basketball Assn. teams.
--Gene Shue (1978-79 to 1979-80 and 1987-88 to 1988-89): Out of basketball after being fired last Thursday. He is taking a short vacation and may discuss another position within the organization when he returns, but it’s not likely any will be agreed upon.
--Paul Silas (1980-81 to 1982-83): Involved in several business ventures in the New York-New Jersey area. Last in basketball in 1985-86 as an assistant with the New Jersey Nets.
--Jim Lynam (1983-84 to 1984-85): Coach of Philadelphia 76ers.
--Don Chaney (1984-85 to 1986-87): Coach of Houston Rockets.
